Alvin “Al” Merkes (1930-2018)

Alvin Merkes

Born on the Fourth of July, 1930, Alvin M. Merkes was raised on a dairy farm in Rozelville, Wisconsin.

He married Beatrice Schoenfuss in 1952 prior to entering the Army where he served in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal (E-4). After two years of service, the couple made their home in Kenosha where he worked at Stanley Vendors before opening Abbey Carpet in 1972.

He was a faithful and active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church for more than 50 years. Al was a generous servant to his community and extended family, leaving a legacy of faith and fond memories of his sense of humor to all who knew and loved him. He served as a Boy Scout leader, as a volunteer with the Department of Aging and was a lifetime member of the Kiwanis Club and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beatrice, and five children; Linda (Ralph) Wooddell, Holland, OH, Greg (Diane) Merkes, Kenosha, WI, Terry (Mike) Doherty, Racine, WI, Karen (Michael) Englert, Henderson, NV, and Michelle Merkes, Kenosha, WI. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Jessica (Scott Bantham), Big Timber, MT, Amy (Andrew Tucciarone) Lewis Center, OH, Dayna (Jason Kosup) Merkes, Trevor, WI, Sara Merkes, Kapaa HI, Erica Mazzei, Columbus, OH, Matthew Englert, Oakhurst, CA, Gregory Englert, Henderson, NV, Pvt. Boyce Farrar, U.S. Army, Erin Doherty, Bourbonnais, IL, Nicole Merkes, Kenosha, WI, and Emily Englert, Henderson, NV. Five great grandchildren include Freya and Ulla Bantham, John Tucciaronne, Wesley and Maleena Kosup.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday September 25, 2018 at 11:00AM at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kenosha. (2224-45th Street) Visitation with the family will take place on Monday September 24, 2018 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM at the Kemper Center Founders Hall. (6501-3rd Avenue) Entombment will follow at All Saints Catholic Cemetery.
The family thanks Froedtert Hospital and staff and Hospice Alliance of Wisconsin.

In lieu of flowers memorials to either Hospice Alliance or the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight of WI would be appreciated.
