Richard H. Smith, 80, a resident of Kenosha, died Monday, February 16, 2008 at St. Joseph Home for the Aged.
Richard was born on May 29, 1928 to Phillip and Rose (nee Fish) Smith in Evanston, IL. He was educated in the schools in Illinois and Wisconsin, graduating from Mary D. Bradford High School.
On July 16, 1949 he married Shirley Hamelink in Kenosha at St. Mark Catholic Church.
He had a love for animals, and loved his cats. He was a volunteer at the Kenosha Medical Center. He loved needle point, and made Afghans for his grandchildren.While retired, he took up horse back riding and competed with his grandson Andrew. He was an avid reader, gardner and grew roses. He and Shirley enjoyed squaredancing in Kenosha and Green Valley, Arizona.
He was a past member of the Kenosha Elks Club, an Adult Education Teacher at Gateway Technical College and was very involved in Tremper Band Boosters and chaperonedtrips. In Tuscan Arizona, he was a Docent at the Desert Museum.
He is survived by his wife Shirley of Kenosha; three daughters, Candace (Doug) Stein of Pleasant Prairie, Dawn (James) Piencikowski of Kenosha, and Joy (Mark) Meddaugh of New Berlin, WI; six grandchildren, Eric Stein, Andrew (Lisa Slavik) Stein, Justin(Heidi) Piencikowski, Jessica Piencikowski, Meghan Meddaugh, and Katherine Meddaugh;one sister Mary (Vincent) Ruffolo of Jacksonville, FL.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 20, 2009 at St. Anne Catholic Church at 11:00AM. Visitation will be on Friday at the church from 10:00until the time of Mass. Entombment will take place at All Saints Catholic Cemetery.
