Steven S. Kempf, age 62, a resident of Beach Park, died peacefully on Tuesday October 6, 2015 surrounded by family at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago after a three-month battle with brain cancer.
Steve was born December 30, 1952 in Wausau, WI to Dorothy (Herrmann) and the late Elmer Kempf. He was raised in Zion and Beach Park, and graduated from Waukegan Township High School.
In 1979, he married Ellen Greenwald at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Zion. At the time of his passing, Steve was employed for 13 years as a machine building technician for AutoMed Technologies in Buffalo Grove, and previously worked at Cherry Electric for 27 years.
Steve had been active in his church for many years as an usher, building trustee, and leader in the Lutheran Pioneers. A jack of all trades, he liked to stay busy and was known to have a solution to every problem. He enjoyed classic TV and cinema, as well as spending time outdoors.
Steve is survived by his wife Ellen, four children, Martin (Erica) of Neenah WI, Caitlin (Seth) Williams of Florence AL, Jesse (fiancée Kirsten Lampi) of Houston TX, and Rebecca of Beach Park, and his grandchildren Evan, Alexander, and Eloise Kempf. He is further survived by his mother Dorothy (Waukegan) and brother Randall and nephew Arlo (Toronto, Ontario).
He was preceded in death by his father Elmer Kempf.
Steve’s family would like to thank their friends and loved ones for the great extensions of love and support the past three months.
A memorial service will be held on Monday October 19, 2015 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church (1310 Frolic Ave.) at 5pm. Visitation with the family will be at the church from 3pm until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his name to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Jim Sinkus says:
To Ellen & family, and to Mrs. Dorothy Kempf,
I was a school mate of Steve’s for 3 years at Our Saviors Lutheran in Zion. We went thru 6th, 7th & 8th grades together. He was a great guy to grow up with. We shared some good times. We were arrested for driving his brothers motorcycle without a license for either of us on Columbus Day in 1967. We didn’t turn out to be bad guys. I didn’t see Steve as much as after 8th grade as we went to different high schools. We did keep in touch somewhat thru that time at church. We had a lot of the same interests thru the 60’s like the music. We had fun together as teenagers growing up. I have nothing but good memories of our times together. We talked at Christmas time last year for over 2 hours on the phone. First time we spoke in almost 40 years. I was hoping to get together with him this past summer, and then learned of his illness. I’m sorry we didn’t get that chance. God took you too early Steve. I guess he needed another “Good Guy” in Heaven. Rest well my friend. I look forward to our next meeting. God bless & keep you! My most sincere & deepest condolences to Ellen & family, and to Mrs. Dorothy Kempf.
Sincerely & Respectfully, your friend Jim Sinkus
