Robert W. Johnson

Robert (Bob) W. Johnson, age 96, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather peacefully took his last breath at home, where he wanted to be, on August 30th, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

After graduating from Washington Park High School in Racine, Wisconsin he volunteered for service in the Army Air Force during World War II, even fudging his age slightly to qualify. After the war he attended Aeronautical Engineering school in Oklahoma.

In 1950, he married Mary Fergus at First Presbyterian Church where they were active members for all 74 years of their marriage.

He served on the Racine County Board for 16 years and was a proud member of the 8th Air Force Association. He enjoyed many hobbies which included woodworking, stained glass and chair caning, which he lovingly shared with his daughters, grandchildren and friends.

After his retirement from Twin Disc, he was fortunate to enjoy 34 years which allowed him to travel to many parts of the world. Highlights of his golden years included participating in Honor Flight, and touring Russia, China, and the Normandy landing beaches.

He was a voracious consumer of World War II movies and books. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Mary, and his three daughters, Jennifer (Jack) Swartz, Susan (Casey) Fitzgerald, and Lynn (Dennis) Gohlke, along with 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.

Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family on Saturday, September 7th. Visitation will be at 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, 716 College Avenue, Racine. Funeral service to follow at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Racine, or Hospice Alliance, 10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd, Pleasant Prairie, 53158.

Thoughts for Robert W. Johnson;

  • As Chaplain for the American Legion Post 21 and the Sons of The American Legion Squadron 21 in Kenosha Wisconsin, I’d like to say thank you for your service and God bless you, your family, and your friends. You’re all in my prayers. Just remember he was a gift from God and knowing him was even a bigger gift. 🙏🏻🫡

  • We feel a sense of loss.

    But we also feel thankful for being fortunate enough to have met Bob; not everyone can say that!

    Thirty-five years ago, Bob traveled from Racine to Western North Carolina to attend our wedding and he brought his video equipment. He captured one of the most important moments in our lives. We call it the “Johnson Video” and it is one of our most treasured possessions. Bob also gave us a stained glass “C” which he made as a wedding gift. It hangs proudly at the living room window of our home.

    Through the years our meetings were brief, but I always had the sense that we, through his kindness, received much more from Bob than what we gave. I’m sure that those who knew Bob will feel the same way. Most of all, we will treasure his warm-hearted kindness and the grace in which he lived, loved and touched those he met along the way.

    We are forever thankful that our journeys intersected.

    With gratitude,

    Joe and Leslie Carreiro
