In Loving Memory of Richard James Schmidt

Richard James Schmidt, known affectionately as Dick, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, November 21st, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 86 in Kenosha, WI.

Born on October 17th, 1937, in Milwaukee, WI, Dick led a life filled with diverse experiences and accomplishments. He attended school in Milwaukee before pursuing post-secondary courses at Gateway Technical College and the College of Lake County. His professional journey began as a repairman at Marchandt Calculators, where he served the Milwaukee and Kenosha areas. Later, he ventured into pest control for 20 years, leaving an indelible mark on the communities he served. Dick also contributed his skills to Ace Hardware and First Student School Bus.

During his school years in Pittsburgh, PA, Dick met the love of his life, Beverly Conely. They exchanged vows on November 7th, 1959, and made their home in Kenosha. Sadly, after 24 years of marriage, Beverly passed away following a brief illness. On May 25th, 1984, Dick found love again and married Patricia Callahan at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Their union brought together a blended family of 8 children, creating a loving and supportive home.

Dick is survived by his devoted wife Patricia, and their children: Elaine (Richard) Ogren, Kelly Callahan, Valerie (Jeff) Shipley, Alan Schmidt, Kathleen (Todd) Thomas, Dan Callahan, Lisa (Joseph) Miller, Andrea (Dave) Beronich, along with 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Beverly, and great-grandson Zac.

One of Dick’s proudest accomplishments was the meticulous restoration of his Rhodes 19 sailboat, aptly named “All That Jazz,” which set sail in the year 2000. Beyond sailing, Dick embraced a love for music, mastering the soprano and alto recorders. His creativity extended to crafting unique clocks, showcasing his talent and passion for the arts.

Dick was an active member of various organizations, including the Civil Defense Auxiliary Police, Kenosha Yacht Club, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Kenosha Toastmasters, and the Kenosha Senior Center. His commitment to community service and social engagement endeared him to many.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Hospice Alliance and Dick’s physicians for their compassionate care during his final days. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mark’s Parish, Kenosha, WI, or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Richard James Schmidt will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but for the love he shared, the bonds he created, and the joy he brought into the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. May his adventurous spirit and warm heart continue to inspire us all.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, November 25th, 2023 at St Marks Catholic Church (7117 14th Ave. Kenosha) Visitation with the family will be on Saturday at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass. Burial will take place later at All Saints Catholic Cemetery.
