Richard “Dick” Oass, age 77 of Kenosha passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 1, 2023 at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Administration hospice unit from complications of leukemia. He was born March 28, 1946 in Kenosha to the late Gustav and Alice (King) Oass and grew up in both Kenosha and Naperville, IL, graduating from Mary D. Bradford High School and attending UW Parkside. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965 and proudly served his country. He was wounded in combat during his tour in Vietnam, and was awarded the Purple Heart many years later. Dick was employed at Illinois Bell and the U.S. Post office prior to his retirement.
On December 18, 1971 he married Bennie Scism at St. Mary’s Lutheran Church in Kenosha and together they raised two daughters. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Michigan; owning a charter business for several years, attending car shows in his restored 1968 GTO, participating in several Vietnam veteran groups and entertaining friends and family on his back porch. His family, friends and pets meant the world to him.
Surviving are his wife Bennie, daughters Jennifer Oas of Racine, and Dawn Oass of Kenosha, grandchildren Sean (Ariah), Ryan (Megan) Alexander and Antonio; great granddaughter Madeleine due in September and sister Jean Antes. Dick is also survived by his best friend of over 30 years Roy Scuffham, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors and brothers of Hill 724 and furry friends Eddie and Bowie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law Fred Scism and Rozella (Chris) Heg, brother Tom Oas and brother-in-law Ralph Antes.

A memorial service with military honors will take place at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park July 26, 2023 at 10:00am.

Richard and I served together A Btry 1st LAAM Bn. in Vietnam. He was a good Marine and friend. I remember the night he got hit during a rocket attack.
