It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marlene Rita Schmidt (Johnson), age 81, of Kenosha, WI on November 5th, 2025. She was born on March 30th, 1944, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to the late Arthur Johnson and Ester (Krueger) Johnson. She graduated from Central High School in La Crosse, WI with aspirations of becoming a nurse. At age 18, she met Jerome Schmidt, whom she then married on July 4th, 1964. They recently celebrated 61 years of being together. Marlene had 4 children and 5 grandchildren, that meant the absolute world to her.
Marlene loved spending time with her family and played an active role in the lives of her grandchildren. She had many passions including sewing, cooking, gardening, and baking throughout her life. On many occasions she would be seen laughing and playing cards or games and listening to music, especially the Carpenters. She was also a proud den leader for her son’s Boy Scout Troop. She had a presence that brought everyone together, especially during Christmas time. The holidays were some of the best times due to her joyous spirit and desire to make everyone feel just as special as she was. Her kind soul and nurturing spirit will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by many.
Our beloved mother, wife, Grammy and dear friend will be deeply missed by her husband Jerome Schmidt, children: Sheila Schlitz, Gary James Schmidt, Paula (Jack) Adkins, and Amy (Jason) Lay, grandchildren: Lauren Schlitz, Aaron Schlitz, Megan Schlitz, Jeremy Adkins, and Greyson Lay as well as other surviving relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and son in law Jeffery Schlitz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (2224 30th Ave, Kenosha) on Wednesday November 12th, 2025, at 11 A.M. A visitation will also be held at church at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. The interment will be held at St. George Catholic Cemetery immediately following the services.

Schmidt family. Paul 🩷 I’m so very sorry for your loss and pain. I have so many memories of your mom. She was the best. Her laugh and silliness with us when we were kids always made me feel like I was home at your house. I know you will miss her dearly so I hope all your memories help you through this difficult time. Love, Heather.

Many fine memories of Marlene @ their home on the North side of Kenosha. She always liked me. She responded to many of my posts on Facebook.

Dear Paula, Shorty, Sheila, Gary and Amy, you mom was the quintessential sweet and deeply caring mother of our block. Back when we were growing up, with all those kids in that neighborhood, we needed a go to mom. She was reliable and always silly/fun spirited which made her accessible and you felt at ease in her presence as a child. I pray that you all will find peace treasuring all those memories that are deep in your hearts. I’m aching I can not be there today. I work 8 to 7 today and Thur but am off Friday and hope to give you a warm hug. Prayers be with you today🙏
