Mae Elizabeth Horton (Wiersum), 95, was born to Benjamin Wiersum and Elizabeth Balk Wiersum at home in Kenosha, Wisconsin on April 22,1926.
She grew up in a close loving family surrounded by many cousins and close relatives. She was an adored younger sibling to her older brother, Kenneth, who preceded her in death in 1976.
She attended McKinley Elementary, McKinley Junior High and Bradford High School. After high school she worked at Jockey, Simmons and for Great Lakes Military.
She met Bob Charles Horton on a blind date soon after WWII ended through mutual friends. They were married May 9,1947 at the First Methodist Church in Kenosha. They were married for 70 years and eight months and spent all of their lives in Kenosha. Mae was preceded in death by her parents, brother, daughter Nancy (1973) and husband Bob (2018). She is survived by three of four daughters; Pamela Holt (Stephen, deceased 1989) of Granger Indiana, Marilyn Gustafson (Steven) of Aurora, Nebraska, and Patricia Ericson, (Scott) of Kenosha. There are nine grandchildren; Becky (Adam) Callender, Joe (Stacie) Gustafson, Stephen Holt, Suzanne (Christian) Evans, Jeff (Faith) Gustafson, Kathryn (Greg) Schermier, Ryan (McCartney) Ericson, Mark (Hayley) Ericson and Kaitlyn Ericson. There are also twenty-five great grandchildren.
Mae was known for her quiet demeanor and steadfast faith in the Lord. Mae was a wonderful and dedicated wife and mother and spent her years as a full-time mom and devoted wife. Her quiet strength was a model to all of us. She was an active member in Kenosha Bible Church and served in a variety of ways over the years. She was a gracious hostess to many family and social events and loved any and all activities with her friends and family. She volunteered for Kenosha Hospital for many years and was active with the Christian Women’s Club. She loved to travel throughout the United States and made two trips abroad with her husband. She also spent many years camping in the summers in Conover, Wisconsin. As she neared the end of her life, she sincerely desired to move into the presence of her Lord and Savior. Those of us who believe in Jesus, plan to see her again soon in eternity with those who have gone ahead. We will miss her every day until then.
Memorials may be made to Kenosha Bible Church in her memory. A service will be held at a later time.
