Leslie Martin Briesemeister, known by many titles throughout his rich and meaningful life — Son, Little Brother, Cousin, Husband, Father, Father-in-law, Grandpa, and most recently, Great Grandpa for the third time — passed away leaving behind a legacy of love and wonderful memories.
Les was born on January 15, 1937, to Louise (Hartopp) and Ray Briesemeister, finding his place alongside his brother Jack in their Winnetka, Illinois home. His early years were marked by the warmth of family and the adventures of youth, later enriched by the move to Sunny Breeze Farm on Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin, where he embraced the simplicity and beauty of rural life.
In 1959, Les married Marlyn (Albrecht), and together they nurtured a loving family, raising their son Daniel F. Briesemeister and adopting two daughters, Laura Lynn and Lesli Ann. Their house in Libertyville, Illinois, never had a dull moment.
Les’s career at Abbott Labs showcased his remarkable intellect and pioneering spirit, earning him recognition as a brilliant computer coder and specialized analyst. Amidst the seriousness of his work, he delighted in sharing tales of camaraderie and mischief with his team, where even mundane tasks bore the mark of his humor and creativity.
Though life led him through changes, including a second marriage to Donna Wilkewitz in later years, Les’s heart eventually found its way back to Marlyn, with whom he shared countless cherished moments alongside their grandchildren.
Les’s passions were as varied as they were vibrant. A self-taught guitarist, his music filled the air with joy, whether leading a Bluegrass Band or singing in the church choir. His love for music was matched only by his devotion to his faith, evident in his leadership of Bible studies and kindness to those less fortunate.
Les’s gentle soul touched all who knew him, his kindness transcending boundaries of judgment or expectation. Whether fixing a broken item with his beloved Duct Tape or offering a listening ear, his generosity knew no bounds, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those he encountered.
In his quiet moments, Les found solace in the simple pleasures of life — from the pages of a book to the melodies of a song, from the challenge of a puzzle to the cheer of a sports match. Always accompanied by the warmth of good company and the comfort of good ol’ Jack Daniels. Straight up, of course!
Les was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, his first wife, Marlyn, and their son, Danny. Les is survived by his two daughters, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grand children and several cousins.
As we bid farewell to Leslie Martin Briesemeister, we take solace in the knowledge that his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. May his legacy of love and compassion be a guiding light for us all, as we remember and honor a life well-lived.
