It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Jean Mason. Jean was a bright, talented, artistic, and thoughtful person who never quite found what she was looking for. Unable to find the right balance in life, peace often eluded her. It was only in those endless days of childhood that she truly seemed happy. But when that last perfect summer ended, and it was time to pass into adulthood, Jean found herself unable to cope with the minutiae of day-to-day life, plagued as she was by depression and emotional trauma. These took a toll on her health, so when her heart gave out it had carried more weight than you would expect of someone only 57 years old.
Jean is survived by a brother, Larry Mason, a sister, Cathy Polovina, sister-in-law Laura Mason, and nephews William and James Mason. She and we owe a lot to Pam Tenuta – Jean’s lifelong friend, confidant, and protector, who did so much to advise her and care for her.
Despite her many troubles she tried to live a life where she would express her love for those she cared about. Besides her family and Pam, Jean loved Karl Young, a kindred spirit who wrote poetry and cared deeply for her. Unfortunately, she lost him in 2017. In the words of John Lennon, “It matters not who you love, where you love, when you love or how you love, it matters only that you love.” And Jean did love. Dear Jean, may you find the peace in death that so eluded you in life.
