Elizabeth Burian (1921 – 2010)

Elizabeth Burian, age 88, a resident of Kenosha, died Sunday January 17, 2010 at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Kenosha after a courageous battle from a broken leg and its complications.

Elizabeth was born on February 26, 1921 in Hinsdale, IL to Thelma (Cutler) and Floyd Clutter. She grew up in Chicago, Illinois. Her favorite past time as a young woman was roller skating. She was a wonderful dancer on skates and drew attention to herself by how graceful she was on the floor. Later, she took that gracefulness to the dance floor at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, where she met her future husband.

Elizabeth married Joseph Burian in Chicago at St. Benedict’s Church. She worked with her husband at Standard Map and two different Holiday Inn gift shops in Chicago that they owned and operated. Later she worked at Augustana Hospital as head cashier until her retirement in 1988. She moved to Kenosha after she retired to be near her daughter.

Elizabeth’s passion was playing cards. While in Chicago she was an avid poker player with her group of friends sometimes playing cards for the entire night into the wee hours of the morning. She took many trips to Las Vegas where she played poker in the Circus Circus Poker room. Her most recent passion was playing Pinochle at the Kenosha Senior Center, and playing cards with her friends at their homes. She enjoyed all the family gatherings where her extended family celebrated each member’s birthday every year as well as every holiday. She was also a previous member of the Red Hat Society where she made many new friends. She was very close to her mother, as was the rest of the family, and took care of her in her home until her mother’s death in 1990.

Survivors include her children Barbara Stasierowski (formerly Domenk) of Kenosha, WI and Donald Burian of Ann Arbor, MI, her daughter in law, Mary Norris and son-in-law Richard Stasierowski. Also her six grandchildren Anthony Domenk, Stephen Burian, Jeremy Burian, Laura Knack, Gina Gesorski and Kim Harvey; step grandchildren, Krissy Lootans and Dan Stasierowski, seven great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, 1 step great great grandchild, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Richard Clutter, and her former husband, Joseph.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church (1803 83rd Street) at 10:00AM. Visitation will be from 9:00AM until the time of services. Interment will follow at St. George’s Cemetery. Memorial Remembrances may be made to Hospice Alliance, 10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd, Pleasant Prairie or to the family.
