Stephen Scheibl, a thirty-year survivor of a life changing cervical spinal cord injury, died peacefully in the arms of his mother, Mary Jo Scheibl, at Aurora Hospital in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin on Saturday February 10th, 2024.
Stephen was born in Kenosha, WI to James and Gertrude Scheibl. His mother died when Stephen was 2 years old. His father married Mary Jo Scheibl. In doing so Stephen became the baby brother to Mary Jo’s three older sons.
Stephen attended St. Thomas grade school, St. Josph High School, and UW-Superior. At the age of 21, as he prepared to return to college, he suffered a spinal cord injury which significantly altered his life plan. No longer able to pursue his passions of biking, scuba diving, hiking and skiing, Stephen instead was forced to recover and adapt to his limited physical abilities. In adapting he did resume his university studies and attended classes that included history, marketing, government, and music. He also was extremely interested in computer and electrical sciences, and engineering.
Stephen lost his battle for life in his mother’s arms. His last words were, “I’m going to see Dad, John, and Jimbo.”
The family wishes to thank his medical providers including Dr Joe Garretto, all the physicians and staff at Aurora HealthCare, and his home nursing team who continuously cared for him over the years.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday March 2nd 2024 at 11:00AM at St. Peters Catholic Church in Kenosha. (2224-30th Avenue) Visitation with the family will be on Saturday at the church from 9:30AM until the time of mass.

David James Slama says:
Losing Steve was a hard loss, but I know he is in a better place. He was truly my brother. We shared so many years together and so many adventures. From fishing at Green Lake and the fish pizza story to rearranging all the furniture in my mom’s house hopped up on Jolt cola.
We grew up together attending the same schools, hanging out at each other’s house, and visiting each other’s families. Two people could not have been closer.
I love you MaryJo. You and Jim are, were, and will always be my mom and dad too. Thank you for allowing me to be there for Steve’s last hours.
Dr.Josephine Berman says:
